Finding Common Ground: A Father’s Journey Back to Connection

When a father newly arrived in San Diego found his daughters resisting the traditions and language he cherished, he worried they were drifting too far from their roots.

His efforts to keep them connected—strict study routines, limited activities, and rising expectations—only deepened the tension at home. What began as love slowly grew into frustration, leaving everyone feeling unheard and unsafe.

That changed when he was referred to Home Start’s Family Support Clinician Program and met Phyllis, who welcomed him with calm understanding. She helped him see that his daughters weren’t rejecting their culture—they were simply trying to adjust to a new school, new friends, and a new country. Together, they explored ways to bring joy back into their traditions and create a home where culture could be celebrated rather than enforced.

Phyllis connected him with community programs, fatherhood groups, and counseling services that offered language support, stress-management tools, and opportunities to learn from other dads facing similar challenges. She also actively listened to him, provided thoughts from his daughters’ point of view, and reframed the situation. The dad continued gaining insights and made a plan. He began to communicate with patience, encouraging his daughters’ interests and weaving their heritage into daily life in uplifting ways.

Little by little, the atmosphere at home began to shift. His daughters relaxed. He felt more confident and grounded. And the family found a healthier balance—one built on understanding, respect, and shared pride.

Reflecting on the transformation, Phyllis shared,

“He truly loved his daughters. Watching him grow in confidence as a parent reminded me why we do this work.”

Thanks to the generosity of Home Start supporters, families like this one receive compassionate, culturally sensitive guidance that strengthens bonds and helps parents and children thrive—no matter where their story begins.
