Here at Home Start, helping local children and families motivates us each and every day. We love sharing their stories with you.
Meet “Casey.” This mother was recently referred to us by a community partner.
In her initial meeting, Casey shared how she became homeless after her partner was hospitalized and placed on life support. During this stressful time, Child Welfare Services became involved and removed her three children. Within a few months, her world had turned upside down.
As a coping mechanism, Casey started using illegal drugs and was soon arrested. She began outpatient treatment, was able to stay in sober living for 2 months, but then ended back up on the streets. It was the beginning of a possible endless cycle of homelessness and despair. But then she found Home Start.
From that very first appointment, Home Start staff have provided intensive case management to assist Casey with putting her life back together.
First, our team supported her in securing a steady job. Then we provided financial assistance to help her move into her own apartment. She now has a safe place to call home and is filled with hope that she will soon be reunited with her children.
In fact, this week Casey reported that her appointment with Child Welfare Services went extremely well. All signs are pointing in the right direction.
Thanks to the help of caring partners like you, Casey is no longer struggling on the streets, thinking she might never see her children. Instead, she is working on her plan to reconnect with them so they can be a family once again.
Thank you for your continued support to strengthen families and build resilient children in San Diego.
