Lillian is a brave domestic violence survivor who fled from her abusive husband with her two sons, 4 year old Zach and 7 year old Arnold. She works part-time and spends the rest of her week taking her children to school, therapy appointments, and personal therapy sessions. Her older son is diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and he requires extra services. She also cares for her elderly parents.
Lillian was grateful for the opportunity to enroll her younger son Zach in Home Start’s Behavioral Health Services in March. Zach had witnessed significant domestic violence with his dad abusing his mom, and that had caused an increase in Zach’s aggressive behaviors toward his brother and other severe behavioral challenges.
Home start therapist Valeria started working with Zach and Lilian in March, using the Parent-Child Interaction therapy model to help build a stronger parent-child attachment. This has helped to manage Zach’s aggressive behavior and improve his ability to listen more.
Zach and Lilian are now in the last phase of therapy. We are pleased to report that there have been numerous positive changes thus far in Zach’s behavior towards his older brother, and more changes are coming. Lastly, this family is grateful to be participating in Home Start’s befriend-a-family program this year which will bring them much deserved holiday cheer.
